On Saturday evening, August 30th, 2014 at 10:35pm the Attleboro Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of Washington Street and Mendon Road for a motor vehicle crash. Responding officers were advised that one vehicle was on fire.
Upon the arrival of police, it was determined that the fire had been extinguished by passersby who used fire extinguishers from the gas station nearby. Investigation showed that the vehicles involved in the crash included a white 1996 Mitsubishi convertible and a gray 2012 Toyota Highlander SUV.
The occupants of the vehicles were treated for injuries at the scene and were transported to area hospitals for further treatment.
The 39-year old female operator of the Toyota Highlander (identified as Mame Ndiour of Pawtucket, RI) was transported to Pawtucket Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown however she is not believed to have been seriously injured in the crash.
The 37-year old male operator of the Mitsubishi (identified as Nuno Veiga of Pawtucket, RI) was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
A 40-year old male passenger in the Mitsubishi (identified as Juliano Costa of Pawtucket, RI) was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for serious injuries sustained in the crash. He remains hospitalized at R.I.H. for his injuries.
The investigation at the scene (which included witness statements) indicated the Toyota Highlander which been travelling northbound had stopped for the red light at Mendon Road and was struck from behind by the Mitsubishi convertible which was also travelling northbound. Investigators are looking into whether or not alcohol might have been a contributing factor.
